Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the third day (tritiya) of the Shukla paksha (bright half) of Vaisakh (Indian month). According to the Gregorian calendar, this falls in the month of April-May. It is on this day that both the Sun and the moon are said to be at their planetary best, Sun and Moon will be in their exaltation signs, Aries and Tauras respectively. This day is also known as 'Akha Teej'.
This day is also celebrated as the Parashurama Jayanti (birth anniversary) of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Parashurama, the unique confluence of knowledge, valor and courage, is called the sixth Avtar (Aveshvatara) of Shri Hari Vishnu. Parashurama, the supreme devotee of Lord Shiva, is the god of justice and is considered a symbol of courage. Lord Parashuram was born on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.
