Generally regarded as devices to achieve precision and consistency in manufacturing, jigs and fixtures render their services and support in the machining and assembly of components. Very recently, it has been regarded as a category of production tools. A jig is a custom-made tool which guides the cutting or drilling tool so that positioning and repeatability are always maintained. It ensures that every hole, cut, or slot is drilled or cut in exactly the same place and angle, therefore minimising manual errors. Fixtures essentially hold and support the workpiece firmly so that it will not move during machining, even under heavy machining conditions.
