Impact of media on cultural identity
In today’s interconnected world, media plays a powerful role in shaping how individuals and societies perceive themselves and others. From television and films to social media and digital platforms, mass communication has become a central force influencing cultural identity. Cultural identity refers to the shared values, traditions, language, and customs that define a group of people. As media continues to evolve, its impact on cultural identity has become both significant and complex, bringing opportunities for cultural exchange as well as challenges to cultural preservation. Therefore, as a prospective student of BJMC, students must understand the role of media in shaping cultural identities of people.
One of the most prominent effects of media on cultural identity is the spread of global culture. Through movies, music, and online content, people are exposed to lifestyles, languages, and traditions from different parts of the world. This has led to cultural globalization, where certain dominant cultures—often Western—gain widespread influence. For example, fashion trends, food habits, and even communication styles seen in global media are quickly adopted by audiences worldwide. At JIMS VK II, we ensure by educating students about media literacy and cultural sensitivity, helping them critically analyze such influences rather than blindly adopting them. At the same time, media serves as a platform for cultural representation and preservation. This is where BJMC students can make a real difference. Through projects, documentaries, college magazines, and digital content creation, students can highlight regional traditions, folk arts, and local stories. The faculties at Department of Journalism and Mass Communication encourage students to pursue fieldwork and storytelling, which can be used to document and promote cultural diversity. By producing meaningful content, students contribute to preserving cultural identity while also gaining practical experience.
